Gamble tours
Hammond Gamble is preparing for a number of short tours throughout New Zealand, after returning from the United States where he has been trying yet again to set Up his album deal. Gamble appears to be quite philosophical about the process, in spite of having been to the United States three times to set up recording time and a good producer, and he plans to go back for a fourth time in June.
Tim Murdoch, the head of WEA Records in New Zealand, was heading to the West Coast to help Gamble in his endeavours. But while some would consider Hammond Gamble’s efforts to be masochistic, the popular New Zealand rhythm and blues artist realises he might have to wait as long as a year before he can get his United States project underway. In spite of being “bored" in a telephone interview last week, having spent most of
the afternoon on the blower, he managed to impart enough information to be coherent.
"It was hoped to be able to arrange Tom Dowd to pro-, duce the new album, but he was already committed, so we had to turn to Jerry Wexler of WEA Records in the United Staes, for help,” he said.
Gamble said he thought that his album plans would have borne fruit faster than what had taken place so far, but he was quite prepared to wait.
Essentially, the United States album would be a compilation of his best material from his New Zealand releases. Gamble, with his usual line-up of Bruce Lynch, bass, Stuart Pierce, keyboards, and Frank Gibson, jun., on drums will be at the Gladstone Tavern, on March 23 and March 24, and the following two evenings at the Hillsborough Tavern.
