Recording boom

There is a recording boom amongst South Island bands at the moment.

An Auckland producer, Doug Hood, together with Tall Dwarf Chris Knox, has been in the city for two weeks with a four-track recorder. Several acts will emerge from the experience with singles. ,

Ritchie Venus and the Blue Beetles, and the Christchurch all-female group, 25c, both have good singles in the shops now. The Nares new 45 is expected soon, as is the Playthings’ “Bird’s Eye View.”

Mainly Spaniards will have a single out by May, it was recorded recently with Knox

and Hood. Four Dunedin bands are contributing to a Flying Nun twelve-inch double “Dunedin” package. They are the Chills, Stones, Verlaines, and Sneaky Feelings. Recording for that will be completed this week. Bill Direen and The Builders could have something out on vinyl soon too. A posthumous twelve-inch by the Pin Group s»tuld be available shortly. The Clean have recorded again also.

There was far more talent in the South Island than in Auckland, said Hood. The number of records from these climes released to some acclaim, and those to be released, add weight to that.
