Student pilots to hold exercise
West Coast skies will hum with activity for the next two weeks as Royal New Zealand Air Force' student pilots and their Airtrainer aircraft take part in a Wise Owl exercise. The camp commandant for the thirtieth Wise Owl exercise, which starts today, is Squadron Leader P. J. Garnett. He will have 60 people under his command, including five instructors and nine student pilots. There will also be a full support staff to keep the crew and. aircraft in the air completely independently. A Wise Owl exercise is
held in the middle of each 16-month aircrew course to give student pilots a period of intensive flying and navigation over unfamiliar territory. It also gives ground crew and support staff the opportunity to set up and run a self-supporting camp in an operational situation. A self-contained camp will be set up on the Greymouth airfield to support flying training that will range from Nelson to Harihari. The camp will be open for inspection by the public on Sunday, March 28, from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
