Wage-cut plan ‘not pursued’

PA Invercargill A proposal to cut workers' wages 10 per cent to help put the Ocean Beach freezing works back on a profitable path has apparently been dropped. Union and management representatives have been involved in talks to cut costs since the Alliance Freezing Company (Southland). Ltd. took over the plant in January. In a joint statement the two parties said that a budget prepared soon after the take-over showed a possible loss of $1.6 million a year. The company said that it immediately called in union ' representatives and asked for their help in balancing the budget. "Since that date, there have been a series of negotiations at which a large variety of suggestions were considered." the parties said. "The possibility of a 10 per cent over-all wage decrease was discussed at one meeting but has not been pursued either by the union or by the company."
