Ellesmere retains shield
Ellesmere has retained the Senior Shield, symbol of inter-sub-association cricket supremacy, by getting a first innings win and bonus points against Malvern in a final fifth round match. Sharing second place . after four rounds, Ellesmere and Hurnui needed first-innings wins plus bonus points to beat the competition leader, Ashley, which had a bye for the final round. First innings wins only for Ellesmere and Hurunui would have resulted in a tie with Ashley. Ellesmere achieved the winning goal, while Hurunui was beaten on the first innings by Banks Peninsula. Although Ellesmere had some fielding lapses, with six catches dropped,' it still beat Malvern comfortably in their match at Burnham on Sunday. Later to top
score with 55 for Ellesmere, Allan Taylor excelled to take four catches behind the wickets. The seam bowlers, Colin Hight and Merv Taylor, toiled for 24 overs on end in taking three and five wickets respectively. Ellesmere, was given a good batting start with a first wicket partnership of 49 by Stuart Boon and Michael Allan, who continued a profitable second wicket partnership of 50 with Chris Heslop to put Ellesmere in a strong position. Malvern 139 (James Shipley 33. Wayne Pluck 43. Chris Abbott 13, Wyllie Jenkins 15, Brian Hawkins 12; Merv Taylor 3/36, Colin Hight 5/55) lost to Ellesmere 140/5 (Michael Allan 55, Stuart Boon 24, Steve Ryan 24 n. 0..
