Two Toyota firms merge
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo Toyota Motor Company, Ltd, and its selling arm, Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd, have signed a merger agreement to create the largest manufacturing company in Japan. The two companies will merge on July 1 this year, to form a new company called Toyota Motor Company, Ltd, with a capital of $502 million and expected annual sales of over $16.7 billion, a spokesman for the new company said.
The two firms were separated in 1950 on the advice of bankers who saw financial advantages in a division but now the two think they will fare better under one roof. The Toyota group last year manufactured 3.22 million vehicles and sold 1.72 million abroad. Under the agreement one Toyota sales company share will be exchanged for 0.75 of a Toyota Motor Company share.
