Maori rolls
Sir,—As a concerned citizen, proud to be a New Zealander, not English, Irish, French or mixed race but a New Zealander. I feel moved to write and voice my objection to the form of Maori Option at present in circulation. This is 1982. All Maoris are New Zealanders and have all the rights accorded a New Zealand citizen. Special rights for Maoris are out of date and unnecessary in today’s educated society. If anything were calculated to form a schism between Maori and pakeha, to make them feel different from each other, then the movement for Maori rights and such forms as the Maori option to change rolls must be among them. As a nation we condemn apartheid and yet here by our own legislation we condone it. I call it nonsense. I am sure it must appear that way to other nations.. Perhaps
that is why the black African nations treat us so badly. — Yours, etc., P. L. P. THOMPSON. March 9, 1982.
