Cara Dee scores

Special correspondent Dunedin Cara Dee broke a losing streak of 31 starts over the last 15 months with a game win in the Garrett Handicap at the Cromwell Jockey Club's meeting yesterday. Cara Dee, owned and' trained at Moa Flat by Clive Booth, had his previous win at the Southland meeting-in November, 1980. He had managed 12 minor placings, in his 31 starts since, including nine placings in 17 starts this season. Gary Blair sent Cara Dee to the front at the 1100 m after being, handy. He was headed by Helen’s Ridge near the 200 m but came again to take the decision by a nose. Sporting Show, untroubled by the bit slipping through his mouth early in the race, led throughout the Cromwell Stakes. The bit slipped through his mouth when he began gawking and throwing his head about after 400 m. He then dashed to a fivelength lead. This was reduced to two lengths in the middle stages when he “dropped the bit himself,” according to Danny Frye, his rider. Frye called on him for an extra effort at the top of the straight and Sporting Show maintained a strong gallop to win by two lengths. Sporting Show will probably have a race against the older horses at Oamaru or Beaumont to keep him in trim for the three-year-old events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting. Wadi Wahid completed a good innings at the meeting for the Washdyke trainer Maurice Jones, when the gelding won the Great Day Handicap. Wadi Wahid went clear at the 700 m and he kept up a strong gallop to score by a length and a half. Wadi Wahid had also won on Saturday. Jones won a double at the meeting with Chares and gained a second with Melda Jane, his other runner. Chares was untroubled to win the highweight yesterday despite a three kilogram penalty with Jim Pankhurst riding.
