One suspension, three fines
The Ashburton-based apprentice, Grant Davison, was suspended from race riding for two days, and three other riders were fined by the Hororata Racing Club's judicial committee at Riccarton on Saturday. Davison, the rider of Mighty Million in the Riccarton Stud Handicap, received his penalty for the misuse of his whip when the horses were being pulled up. The judicial report did not state what Davison had actually done with the whip. It only stated that he had been charged with the offence when a complaint was lodged after the race. Charlie Brough and Danny Frye were both fined $6O for careless riding and Allan Reeves was fined $3O for weighing in three-quarters of a kilogram over his weigh-out weight for Dolmar in the Bangor Highweight. In coming to the decision of the amount of the fine for Reeves, who admitted he had consumed a small amount of
liquid and food after weighing out. the committee took into account that this was his first offence of this nature. Brough, the rider of Queen’s Pal in the Riccarton Stud Handicap, was found guilty of careless riding in that with about 400 m to go he had allowed his mount to shift inwards when not sufficiently clear, and Beauzia (E. J. McCann) was observed to check. The committee took into account the fact that Queen’s Pal was having her first start and was racing greenly. This was confirmed by Brough. The charge of careless riding against Frye was upheld because of an incident about 1000 metres out in the Homebush Handicap when his mount, Maturity, shifed inwards when not sufficiently clear and caused Big Orders (R. J. Hewinson), which was trailing the leaders, to be checked and lose his position. In coming to the decision of penalty for Frye the committee took into account his frankness and excellent record.
