‘Do-it-yourself
Sir,—Your issue of March 4, carries a report of a proposed private member’s bill to outlaw do-it-yourself plumbing. Do-it-yourself is a manifestation of consumer dissatisfaction with the level of charges and/or services emanating from any trade or profession. 111-conceived legislation brings law-abiding people into conflict with the law. In so doing it brings the law into disrepute and weakens the fabric of society. Moreover, the legislation envisaged would be tacit encouragement to the informer, the busybody, or the spiteful neighbour anxious to pay off an old score. As such it would be socially disruptive. The public interest would be better served by legislation regulating plumbers’ charges to a level acceptable to the public and thus removing the temptation to “do-it-your-self.”—Yours, etc., W. R. ALLARDYCE. March 5, 1982.
