State aid to private schools

Sir,—Private school parents are becoming tired of the N.Z.E.I. attitude on this subject. There are many reasons why parents choose private

education, and in most cases they are not because of wealth or snobbery. They pay dearly for their decision and many suffer hardship. They pay taxes as do all parents but receive little in. return. Fees escalate, because State salaries must be paid in private , schools but Government grants do not increase in comparison. If all parents removed their children from private schools the Education Department would have problems. In Christchurch this risk is circumvented by the zoning systems, where in some areas, parents have no choice of secondary school, unless they resort to measures both honest and dishonest to place their child in an “out-of-zone” school. Some private schools’ education and moral standards are far superior to those of their State counterparts and these, too, will influence a caring parent’s decision. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) I. M. WELD.
