New TV channels planned in Britain
NZPA-Reuter London The British Broadcasting Corporation (8.8. C. will open two new television channels in 1986, using satellite transmission beamed directly to viewers’ homes, the Government has announced. One channel will be paid for by subscribers, who will be able to see films, sports and cultural events not available on other channels. Subscription TV will be an innovation in Britain. The other channel will relay TV programmes from foreign countries, and will be financed, like the 8.8.C.’s two existing channels, from the annual licence fee which all British television owners must pay. The Home Secretary, Mr William Whitelaw, said in his announcement to Parliament that commercial TV firms, which now operate one network and are about to launch another, would also be offered a chance to start satellite broadcasts. Three firms, British Aerospace, Marconi and British Telecoms, the State-owned telephone system, said they would jointly set up and run the 8.8.C.’s satellite system, which would also be used for telecommunications.
