Bowls drought broken
There have been few centre titles that have not fallen to Linwood bowlers in recent years. One, however, that has remained elusive is the colts championship. But yesterday on the Sydenham green Stewart Reed broke a 36-year drought for Linwood in this championship when he beat Noel Marquet (Opawa), 21-18, in the final. ' . It was a game of outstanding bowls, both . players drawing ... some wonderful shots and on two.,. heads in the middle stages', therms, was a string of five ■ touchers, The scoring was close throughout with the scores being level at 1818 before Reed, a second-year
bowler, won the vital last two heads. The semi-finals were Also closely fought. Reed beat Peter Collins (Sydenham). 21-18, in a game which lasted twenty-seven ends and Marquet only got home, 21-19.. against Ron Fridd (Woolston Park). Reed had a close call in the quarter-finals, beating Alan Dickinson (Elmwood) 21-20 with the winning shot being determined on a ; measure. , Other .. quarter-final •, results were A-; ” Fridd 21.
