Aero pageant
Nelson reporter The Nelson Aero CLub entered its fifty-first year on a highly successful note. The presence of more, than 200 aircraft from throughout New Zealand and flying displays ranging from the meanderings over Nelson Airport of a Tiger Moth to the ear-shattering scream of an R.N.Z.A.F. Skyhawk in its final low-level run, attracted a crowd of about 8000 to the airport on Saturday. The occasion was the annual pageant of the Royal New Zealand Aero Club, organised by the Nelson club which was celebrating its jubilee.
Never before in New Zealand has there been assembled such a diverse range of aircraft. A variety of twin-engine and single engine craft vied for attention with gliders, helicopters, and parachutes and the crowd seldom had time to bring their faces back from the perpendicular. An R.N.Z.A.F. Orion made several low passes over the airfield, at speed, at slow speed and with one airscrew feathered, and the Skyhawk and the CT4 aerobatic team from Wigram gave exciting displays, of aerobatics and formation flying.
