Labour policy
Sir,—The claim by Mrs Hercus, M.P., that during her long life “Labour had not promoted or adopted policies involving nationalisation” is utter nonsense. Labour nationalised the Bank of New Zealand, tied the country up in an economic strait-jacket, virtually ran the producer boards, and spent their spare money. It gobbled up bus companies into the Road Services to the extent that Sir Tom Newman warned that any attempt to nationalise Newman Bros would be strongly resisted. Labour refused to allow State House tenants to purchase their homes and had everyone wondering whose turn it was to be nationalised next. Labour today embraces socialists from the deepest red to the palest pink and it is not surprising that confusion surrounds it.—Yours, etc.,
J. F. GARVEY. March 3, 1982.
