Don Carson appeal
Sir,—Though the Commissioner of Security Appeals has apparently decided not to reopen the “Don Carson Case,” the matter is too important to be allowed to sink into oblivion as the implications are ominous. If Mr Carson’s character can be assassinated by the Prime Minister, and despite a decision that the S.I.S. statement was not supported by fact, he can now be dismissed without the apology any gentleman would have offered him, and moreover nearly $2OOO worse off (the expense of clearing his name), each one of us must face up to the fact that this is the treatment we can expect if we happen to prove to be a convenient scapegoat. This injustice, and the threat to our freedom to think for ourselves it implies, must not go unchallenged. Maybe the National Party should consider a name-change, in the interests of accuracy? — Yours, etc., ALLEN COBURN. March 4, 1982.
