Record entries
There is a widespread interest in the 72nd show of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association, which will be held at Winchester tomorrow. Some of the evidence for this is the growing number of entries received each year from all sections of the community, both town and country. In 1978. the entries were 2576; in 1979. 2869; in 1980, 2871; in 1981, 3203; and this year a new record, 3291. This year, there also will be post entries for nine classes in a new angora goat section, as well as post entries for cut flowers and the dog trials. The cups presented each year by the association were valued recently at 58000. Horse and riding classes are always a special feature of the show, attracting wide interest all over Canterbury,
and this year is not likely to be an exception. New classes will include riding side saddle, a section fours competition for ponies and. a leaping competition. South Canterbury has many pony clubs and these provide an effective nursery school for young riders, many of whom become very experienced and talented.
While horses create the most interest at the show, those in farming will find special interest in the entries of sheep, cattle and pigs. There also will be milking and angora goats at Winchester. which was the first showin South Canterbury to provide special classes for goats. The animal nursery tent was so popular last year with young people that the committee has decided to repeat it. There will be a deer and fawn from Hadiow Game Park as well as a wallaby and a joey. Cats and kittens, dogs and pups, hens and chickens, pigs and piglets, ewes and lambs, a cow and a calf, and rabbits and their young. It was found last year that the nursery tent has a fascination for both young and old. In addition, the South Canterbury Hunt will present their hounds.
The grain and produce section, as well as home handicrafts. are likely to attract wide interest, and the district young farmers clubs have 'organised a tractor backing competition and a sheaf tossing competition. Another attraction will be a wood chopping competition run by the Aqrangi Axemen's Club.
Music will be provided by the Temuka Highland Pipe Band, and special guests at the show this year will be 34 children and six adults from the Salvation Army Boys Home at Temuka.
