Maths contest preparation
S' New Zealand high school pupils are among those preparing for this year’s Australian mathematics competition for the Wales Awards. The competition, now in its sixth year, is sponsored by the Canberra College of Advanced Education, the Canberra Mathematics Association, and the Bank of New South Wales. About 200,000 pupils in New Zealand, Australia, and the South-West Pacific took part in the competition last year. It is thought to be the biggest mathematics com-
petition in the world on a population basis. A total of $25,000 in prizes will be distributed among leading candidates and the winners will be given medals at a formal function. Certificates will also be awarded. The contest will be held on June 16. The papers contain 30 graded questions with multiple choice answers. Wrong answers are penalised. The papers are marked by a computer at the Canberra College of Advanced Education which took 25 minutes to mark 180,000 entries last year.
