Drop in traffic accidents
The 1977 traffic regulation changes for giving way at intersections have reduced injury accidents, according to Mr C. M." Clissold, chief traffic engineer with the Ministry of Transport in Wellington.,
Where motorists turning left now gave way to those turning right, injury, accidents had dropped to 25 per cent of the previous total. Mr Clissold told the New Zealand Institution of Engineers conference .being held this week at the University of Canterbury. Another change where, when there were no "stop” or “give-way” signs, motorists turning right now gave way to those turning right on their right, had reduced injury accidents by more than 50 per cent. Previously, road courtesy had prevailed, -Mr Clissold told the conference. Generally, rear-end accidents had stayed'the same, or dropped. The exception was where straight-through vehicles overtook over the centre line, said Mr Clissold. The accident increase in these cases could have been partly due to vehicles now being able to wait in the middle of the road in over--50km/h hour areas, when turning right.
