NZPA London The only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day in 1944 will be auctioned at Sotheby’s on March 4. The nation’s highest award for military gallantry was won by Company SergeantMajor Stanley Hollis, of the Green Howards Regiment. The V.C. and seven other medals he won were expected to fetch up to $50,690, a spokesman for Sotheby’s said. Mr Hollis died about 10 years ago. -The medals were sent for auction anonymously. The citation for his V.C. told how C.S.M? Hollis captured a German pillbox single-handed, led a party of men which destroyed'a field gun, then helped two mates pinned down by enemy fire. By his bravery, the citation said, he prevented the Germans from holding up the British advance, and saved the lives of manv of his men.
