Youngsters win at Rotorua

Special correspondent Auckland The three-year-olds gave lessons to their older opponents in the double at Rotorua yesterday. .Two ran in the first leg. the Rotorua Challenge Stakes, two in the second leg. the Air New Zealand Flying Handicap, and each time they took the first two platings. Bound To Honour extended a wonderful record for good, honest endeavour when she took the Challenge Stakes. Whatever hard luck attended the runner-up Jon. she thoroughly deserved her win. Jon certainly made it difficult for himself, back near last in the early running then having to go wide, but Bound to Honour was little better served in the running. Bound To Honour was first of the two to move, going forward from third last at the 600 m to be right on the heels of the leaders, Precious Son, Glamour Bay and .Caucus around the home turn. Jon tracked Bound To Honour so that there was .little between them with 150 m or so to run.

.I Asked then for a bit more 3>y her rider. David Peake, To Honour drew (•ahead and she. went on to win most'decisively. Not that Jon let down his backers, for

his first try outside the intermediate classes he shaped very well indeed. This was Bound To Honour's fourth ■ win of the season. Her record, altogether. as a three-year-old, is four first placings. three seconds, four thirds and a fourth in 16 attempts for $57,490 in stakes. Her three other successes were in the Great BritainNew Zealand Stakes, at Ellerslie. Thames Valley Stakes (Te Aroha) and Dulcie Stakes (Te Rapa). Glamour Bay was a hot

favourite for the Challenge Stakes and disappointing in her failure to run on sufficiently well. The rider, Bruce Compton, summed up her performance — "she switched off, just when she should have been switching on." he said. Bound To Honour, returning Imin 54.75, was just half a second outside the 1900 m course record. Tudor Sky cracked the track best for 1100 by seven-tenths of a second when she won the Flying Handicap in Imin 3.35.
