Parasite workshop open to farmers

Parasite control will be the subject of major workshops for farmers, veterinarians. and advisers to be held at Lincoln College in July. According to Professor A. R. Sykes of the animal science department at Lincoln College, there is increasing scientific evidence showing that losses on farms resulting from gastro-intesti-nal parasitism in grazing sheep and cattle are much greater than has been appreciated.

"The problem can account for growth rate differences of the order of 50 per cent in young stock." he said. "And an unplanned approach tc the use of anthelmintics is unlikely to solve it."

The workshops will aim tc give farmers and their consultants an in-depth appreciation of the possibilities and problems of parasite control methods. There will be sessions on the biology of parasites. the principles of control. and on the problems of planning integrated parasite control systems for farms.

The workshops have the backing of the Veterinary Services Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Lincoln plans for the occasion to be the first in a series of pastoral industries workshops, as a response to the demand for a detailed and thorough approach to some of the problems of animal husbandry, said Professor Sykes. There will be two parts to the workshops. The first day will be for veterinarians and advisers. There will be technical sessions to update participants on the state of knowledge on parasites and their control, and planning of extension methods. Then two days will cater for farmers. Joint sessions will cover parasite biology, and the emphasis will be on small group workshops where experts will be on hand to help plan control systems for different situations. Farmers will be invited to bring along information on their own farms. The dates for the workshops are 2nd to 4th of July, with the scientific session on Friday. July 2. and the days for farmers over the weekend. The Veterinary Services Council and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries will be sponsoring some participants. and over-all numbers will be limited to keep groups small.
