Second Polytech rural tutor
Christchurch Polytechnic has appointed a second rural tutor to teach the Trade Certificate in Farming course in Canterbury. He is Mr George Reveley and, like the present tutor, Mr Ken Moore, he will be based at Lincoln College. Mr Reveley has a bachelor of agricultural science from Lincoln, and he has worked in community education positions as well as on farms in Otago and Mid-Canterbury. He has been associated with Young Farmers’ Clubs and church groups.
The scheme he is joining has been working in Canterbury for a year, and its success in attracting enrolments is the reason behind his appointment. Last year Mr Ken Moore taught about 100 students at seven centres around Canterbury, and this year numbers are expected to be over 150. “After a year, the idea of day release instruction has proved itself," Mr Moore says. “Student attendance at classes has been very good, and it reflects a growing awareness among farmers
that training young people is vital in this increasingly complex industry." The course needs the backing of farming employers, he says. With two tutors in the field. Mr Moore hopes there will be more contact between tutors and farmers in their shared role of training young people on the land. The Technical Correspondence Institute still offers a course for students who cannot attend day classes.
