Women’s softball wins
PA Masterton The Wairarapa women’s softball team upset all predictions last night when it beat the touring Canadian women’s team, 2-1, at Memorial Park, Masterton. Wairarapa surprised even its most ardent supporters when it went to a 2-0 lead at the bottom of the fourth innings. Sandra Cotter scored a home run on errors to bring herself and her team-mate Karen Matthews, across the home plate. Wairarapa held its lead until the top of the seventh innings when Canada's Patty Polych came on as a designated hi*'
and scored Canada’s only run. . Canada had runners on second and third before Wairarapa secured the final out. At Hastings, meanwhile, the touring New Zealand women’s softball team crushed an errorridden Hawke’s Bay, 16-0 in a match at Akina Park. New Zealand scored freely throughout, getting two runs at its first time at bat and scoring four runners in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings and another two in the seventh. Pitching for New,, Zealand, Debbie Mygind took seven strikeouts and gave up only two hits.
