‘Arthur’ wins four Golden Globes

NZPA Hollywood Dudley Moore, the drunken millionaire of “Arthur,” and Bernadette Peters, the country girl turned hooker in “Pennies from Heaven,” won Golden Globes for best starring performances in a comedy or musical. Moore was met with a loud ovation from the industry crowd at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s international ballroom. He went on stage for an embrace by the award presenter, Susan Anton, his towering girlfriend. The English comedian made a few cracks and, when his words stumbled, said: “That’s a voice breaking with emotion, in case you’ve never heard that.” Earlier, Moore had come on stage to collect the Golden Globe for John Gielgud, best supporting actor for “Arthur.” Moore joked: “He (Gielgud) was wonderful to work with and I’m sure he’d say the same about me.” Miss Peters was not present to accept her award. Alan Alda went to the stage twice early in the televised show for awards as best television actor in “M.A.S.H.” and to join the producers of the C.B.S. series, which was named best comedy or musical series. Joan Hackett was selected best supporting actress in motion pictures for her role as the scatterbrained, over--40 hypochondriac in “Only

When I Laugh.” She had arrived for the dinner in a wheelchair because of recent surgery but was able to walk to the stage for her award. “I’ve just come out of surgery, and I’ve got to tell you it really does hurt only when I laugh,” she said. An eyebrow-raiser was the selection of Pia Zadora, of “Butterfly.” as the new motion picture star of the year. Few people in the audience seemed to have heard of her or the movie.
