‘Lightnin’ Hopkins dead
NZPA Houston Sam “Lightnin” Hopkins, a songwriter, singer, and guitarist called the last ,of the old-time country blues musicians, has died of cancer at the age of 69. His death on Saturday at St Joseph’s Hospital, Houston, ended a 50-year career in which he entertained' audiences world-wide with his loose guitar playing, gutsy Southern blues style, and high-pitched voice. He made more than 100 records on about a dozen different labels, including "Rocky Mountain,’’ "Mr Charlie,” “Coffee Blues,” “Short Haired Woman,” and ■ “Annie Mae.” 4
