President sworn in
The new Finnish President (Mr Mauno Koivisto) has been sworn in as the nation’s first Social Democratic Head of State. A special college of 301 popularly chosen members elected the Prime Minister as Finland’s ninth president with 167 votes yesterday. Mr Koivisto, aged 58. succeeded Urho Kekkonen, aged 81, President for the last 25 years, who announced his retirement because of ill health in October — Helsinki.
