Hold-up a ‘joke’
PA Wellington A boy aged 13, with a note but no weapon, tried to hold up two Wellington banks on Wednesday and was caught in a hotel bottle store. He later told detectives he meant the hold-ups as a joke. The police said the boy had returned to Wellington recently from Invercargill. About 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday he walked into the Courtenay Place branch of the Bank of New Zealand where he wrote out a slip with the words: “This is a stick-up, hand over the money and pass over the car keys.” He handed the slip to a teller, but when she laughed he ran off.
The boy ran across the road to a branch of the ANZ bank, where he tried the same “joke."
