Goods train off rails

A goods train arriving at Springfield station from Arthur’s Pass about 5 a.m. yesterday morning was derailed 500 metres west of the station.

The acting district traffic manager for the Railways, Mr L. J. Newman, said that the cause of the derailment was not yet known. There were no passengers on the train and no-one was injured in the incident.

A 36-tonne crane from Christchurch was taken to the scene and was used to lift the two engines and three waggons back on to the rails.

The derailment caused slight delays for goods travelling between Christchurch and Greymouth yesterday, Mr Newman said.

Work on the line was not finished in time to allow the 6.40 p.m. railcar to the West Coast to pass, so passengers were taken from Christchurch to Cass by bus and on to Greymouth by railcar.

The line was expected to be reopened late last evening.
