Top Cup trial by Koiro Trelay
Special correspondent Palmerston North Koiro Trelay was easily the best of the six Wellington Cup candidates on show at Awapuni yesterday morning. The grey worked in fine style over about 2000 m. All work was done on the plough except for two gallops on the course proper. Koiro Trelay was timed his last 1600 m in Imin 475, the last 600 m in 39s after running his first 600 m in 42.65. It was sound, even work and a top trial for the Cup.
Avitt took Imin 48.6 s for his 1600 m after going fast early. He slowed near the end and required 42.6 s for his final 600 m. He took no real harm from a fairly hard race in the Marton Cup. Caucus ran 800 m in 51.65, the last 600 m in 38s and had the pace on all the way. He looks fit enough for the Cup. though his Marton effort was disappointing. Ruanuku worked his usual three solid rounds on the sand.
