Powley keen trialist at Riccarton

J. J. BOYLE
Powley, looking bright and acting fresh, was one of the first on the tracks at Riccarton yesterday. Her final trial for the Wellington Racing Club's Telegraph Handicap was a flurry over 400 m on the plough in the hands of the 15-year-old Shane Anderton. About three hours later she was in an aircraft bound for Wellington. Powley was not much above a canter for some distance after she passed the 600 m peg. yet she took only 39 to get from there to the post.
She was at something like her best speed for only 400 m
but it was not possible to time her for that sector. Hector Anderton, the Wingatui owner-trainer of Powley. said he had been concentrating mainly on beach work for the’ star of his stable, and the Noble Bijou mare had done much of her work on the lead. "She's fresh and fit. and if she does all right on the rest of the trip she will go well against those northern sprinters." Anderton said yesterday. Hector Anderton also supervised the less than demanding set piece for the Wellington Cup candidate, Joyarty. before she continued her trip north. Joyarty cantered on the sand before doing a round of pace work on the plough in the hands of Michael Casev.
She looks strong and if the pace in the Wellington Cup places any premium on stamina she could force her wav into the finish.
Waimate candidates supplied much of the other action in yesterday's training, which was done on the plough. The Crofter and Random
Check were paired for 1200 m in Imin 16.8 sec. the last 600 in 37.8.
Amatrice pleased in her winding-up gallop for the Waimate Cup. She was going comfortably alongside Bijou Lad finishing 1200 m in Imin 18sec. the last 600 in 38.
Blue Genes quickened impressively to record 36.2 for the last 600 of 800. Her stablemate. Foam, returned 37.95ec. Buster McCoy led Kelly Robe by two lengths after running 800 in 53.45ec. the last 600 in 39.6.
Cedar Key came up with one of the top gallops of the training — 600 in 35.6. He will race next at the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting. Paul De Brett, now a nine-year-old and winner of the Avondale Gold Cup five years ago. recorded 38 for 600. He has had a history of unsoundness. but is being tried by Bevan Laming. The chestnut has been active working on the lead with trotters, and swimming will make up much of his immediate training programme.
