Carbon dioxide in atmosphere
Sir,—The glaciation threat that I see to Northern Europe and north America arises from the vast amount of carbon high in the atmosphere. Carbon property burned turns to carbon dioxide, which is used by plants; but unburnt carbon is no use to them. Since the Industrial Revolution 200-odd years ago,'there has been a growing accumulation of unburnt carbon in the atmosphere. most of it in the last 30 years — the fumes from cars and trucks, particularly diesels. The carbon stops the sun shining on to.the land. The Northerners, with great speed, will need to invent a new transport or fuel system; or find a way to de-carbonise their atmosphere; or both.—Yours, etc.; G. K. MURROW. January 14, 1982.
