Egypt, Israel set to sign deal on Israel withdrawal

NZPA-Reuter Cairo Egypt and Israel say thev have cleared the way for a final withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsula next April and hope to conclude an agreement today. After two rounds of talks in Cairo yesterday, the Israeli Defence Minister (Mr Ariel Sharon) and the Egyptian Foriegn Minister (Mr Kamal Hassan Ali) said they had resolved the key problems connected with the Israeli pull-out. Mr Sharon, a buly 53-year-old who commanded' the Israeli troops which smashed across the Suez Canal from the Sinai in the 1973 Middle East War, was due to meet the Egyptian President (Mr Hosni.Mubarak) around midday local time.

Afterwards he will see Mr Alli again for another session. The Egyptian Foreign Minister said that in the evening they would sign an agreement settling details of the evacuation from the desert peninsula, captured from Egypt in the 1967 Middle East conflict.

Mr Sharon spoke of a “wonderful atmosphere" in Which the talks had been conducted. “We really feel that we are at peace." he said.

Mr Ali said: “We have resolved all tne problems."

These included, he said, the control of two strategic islands, Tiran and Sinafir, at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba leading to the Israeli port of Eilat.

An Israeli official said last week that wanted the

islands to be patrolled by troops from the Sinai international peace-keeping force that will take up positions when Israel completes its withdrawal on April 26. But Mr Sharon indicated that Israel had accepted Egypt's position that the islands, which control the Straits of Tiran. would be patrolled by the Egyptian police.

Egypt’s semi-official “AlAhram" said yesterday that agreement had been reached for the payment of SUS 34 million by Egypt to Israel for installation’s left behind in the Sinai by the Israelis. The Israeli pull-out was agreed as part of the Camp David peace accords signed by the Israeli Prime Minister (Mr Menachem Begin) and the late Egyptian President. Anwar Sadat.
