England seeks second victory over India
[>A Wanganui England, the leaders in the Women's World Cup cricket championship, will be hoping for a second victory over India at Cooks Gardens today. The strong English side has played five of the one-day matches in the Hansells Vita Fresh-sponsored world series for three wins, a draw with NewZealand. and a loss to the defending champions. Australia. On paper England, which beat New Zealand at New Plymouth on Monday in its last match, looks too ’strong for an Indian side that has scored only one win from four games — against the International XI at Napier.
On the Cooks Gardens wicket, where boundaries are short, both sides should score freely, specially the. strong English lineup. In its unlv previous meeting so far in the month-long world series. England was untroubled to beat India at Auckland. The Indians managed only 112 in 53 overs and England headed off the score in 36 overs for the loss of six wickets.
Although England holds a fourpoint advantage over Australia, the side has plaved two more matches than the Australians and must beat India to stay in the championship hunt. The Australians have a perfect record of three wins from as
many matches for 12 points. Australia and England have each won one of the two previous World Cup tournaments — England at home in 1973 and Australia in India in 1978.
England, which will also meet Wanganui in a one-day nonchampionship game at Cooks Gardens today, has many experienced internationals.
