Care of pets

Sir,—Your leading article on neglected pets has one valid point: the compulsory spaying of all female pets not belonging to an approved breeder. A iaw giving full protection to animals is the only thing that the lazy, the apatnetic, and the outright vicious animal owners would respect, because of the threat to their own comfort and pocket. The S.P.C.A. should speak out loud and clear on this issue, as should Christians, Values supporters, and dog and cat lovers, and anyone who professes concern for justice for ail the citizens of this country. The problem is too horrendous to be dismissed by responsible citizens. — Yours, etc.,

J. SHARP. January 13, 1982. Sir,—lt is appalling to see how’ some human beings can get away with the ill-treatment of poor defenceless animals. How can any decent people go away on holiday leaving their pets’ to fend for themselves, and come back skiting about what a marvellous trip they had? These people have no consciences, or decency as far as their dear little pets are

concerned. This last Christmas is just another example of how the S.P.C.A. has had to deal with these unfortunate creatures. If people are so callous and cruel, why on earth do they keep these pels? — Yours, etc., THIRZA McLELLAN. Westport., January 11, 1982.
