Phase II yachting abandoned
PA Rotorua Racing on the second day of the 470 and Phase Two national yachting championships was abandoned due to the lack of wind on Lake Taupo. z The crews oi the 45 yachts sailed to several areas in Tapuaeharuru Bay but the breeze remained light. The first, two races were held on Monday with the world champion. David Barnes. Auckland, taking the lead in his class. In the Phase Two section. Pollysyllabic. raced by Gerald Ribe. also got a good start to the championship by winning both races. After the first two races. Kermo. raced by Paul Francis, was lying second in the 470 field and Midnight Oil. raced by Murray Jones, was third
D. Cooks, in Pavlova, was second in the phase two races and Senility, handled by J. Quin, was third. Twenty-six 470 s an 19 Phase Two yachts plan to compete in seven races this week. The competitors registered on Saturday and held an invitation race on Sunday. The Lake Taupo yacht club commodore. Mr Boyd Marshall, welcomed the yachties and said the club viewed the championships as an important event in the New Zealand yachting world. “I trust the series will be contested with vigour, friendliness and sportsmanship." he said. The club each year plays host to a major yachting event - last year it was' the Laser championships.
