Beaches busy
Yesterday's heat took many people to North Canterbury beaches, but rough, cold seas discouraged most from swimming. The nor’wester sent the temperatures up to well over 30deg. and the beaches were crowded but, for the most part, the board-riders: had the surf to themselves. The swimmers who had ventured in stayed safely
near the shore, said Mr Geoff Le Cren, spokesman for the Surf Life-saving Association. “It was a beautiful day, but the sea was still fairly cold and there was a bad drift on the main beaches.” he said. Four persons were rescued at Taylors Mistake. Many Christchurch swimming pools were busy.
