Life saving First Conder iron man win

By RAY CAIRNS . Dave Conder’s fineiy-devel--oped surf sense gave him an ■important first iron man victory jn the Hertz surf lifesaving carnival at North Beach yesterday. Trailing Geoff Walker (Waimain). the man who usually makes the running in these demanding events, after the swim and ski legs. Conder came through for a very meritorious win in his best leg. the rnalibu board.

Walker is far from a sluggard on that craft, and he looked to have too great a lead for Conder. But the Taylors Mistake man, like Walker’ a former national champion, had one booming wave come along. A furious paddle from Conder enabled him. just, to hold the wave. That drew him level, but the same wave tossed Walker from his board, and Conder was thereafter never troubled. Another champion of the past, Daryl Neate (Taylors Mistake), got up to Walker on a wave, but had to bow to him in the sprint. Board paddling skill also played a key part in Brent Todd’s win in the junior iron man. The strapping Sumner youth had to concede the swimming leg to Nigel Ward (New Brighton), but he had a solid ski leg. and even if Paul Fidow (South Brighton) had one that was even better, Todd got it all back, with interest, on the board.

that was certainly Fidow’s downfall for. after all his troubles, he failed to cover the complete board course and was disqualified, while Brent Ferigo (New Brighton), whose strength is his board proficiency, took advantage of Michael ’Mead’s problems to snatch second place from the Waimairi lifeguard.

The iron man result was not the only setback suffered by Walker. Simon Davis secured a notable victory when he led in Walker, by a hairsbreadth. Conder and Ken Jones in the long-board; and Neil Shaw, North Beach’s temporary import from Paekakariki, caused a real boilover when he won the ski race heat which included Walker, Neate and Davis. He had been incorrectly entered as a substitute, however, and this was to be a day of near-misses.
