Railway staff Jubilant’
PA Wellington Railway executives were jubilant this week when they heard that electrification of the main line between Palmerston North and Hamilton would go ahead. The electrification will be the biggest single engineering project undertaken by the Railways Department. It is expected to cost more than $lBO .million. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) announced the approval Safter a Cabinet meeting, saying tenders could now be called. •'
The Railways Department’s assistant general manager for engineering and development, Mr Bob Henare, said preliminary earthworks would start this summer. British, Japanese and New Zealand consultants would now be asked to complete design drawings and specifications so that tenders could be called. Mr Henare said the electrification would be done in stages — Palmerston NorthMarton, Marton-Taihape, Taihape-Taumaranui, and Taumaranui-Hamilton.
