Exhibition marks first anniversary
r irsi Anniversary ruAniuiiiun, at the Ginkgo Gallery. Reviewed by David Brokenshire.* In its first year, this gallery has held a number of fine exhibitions. The gallery is celebrating its first anniversary with an exhibition by 14 artists , of 36 works on paper. The prices for the works range from $45 to $550.' , ' ; This is an exciting exhibition. There is a distinguished paper relief by Don-Peebles. Although-it has a reference to the large folded canvas paintings, it is on a smaller scale, which enables the viewer, to encompass it comfortably. With its background and colour change, it is a stimulating structure. Janet Bathgate shows two monoprints with a collage element. Both of them are
delightful. Rodney Fumpston has three etchings on show which all display a wonderful energy combined with ■ fine, glowing colour. Two 'Aramoana protest paintings, are displayed by Ralph Hotere. Although the protest' is the prime impulse and is effectively stated, both paintings stand in their own right as brilliant examples of this artist’s work.
Stanley Palmer’s three dry point-lithographs again are worked familiar warm tones but these particular prints’ have a fine breadth. Penny Ormerod’s two etchings, with their generous red areas, are eye-catching and forceful.
Barry Cleavin has- <seven etchings, all showing his fine draftsmanship, and sardonic sense of humour.’! >
