Taxation expert dies

Wellington reporter

A man who has played a most vital part- in what might be the most important review of New Zealand’s taxation system has died on the eve of its release. Mr T. M. Hunt, a former Commissioner of Inland Revenue and member of the secretariat of the McCaw Committee on taxation .reform, died in Wellington yesterday. The committee to which he was appointed as an adviser has presented its interim report to the Cabinet, and the Prime Minister (Mr

Muldoon) will ask the Cabinet on Monday to release it. During the election campaign, the Government answered taxation promises .by Opposition parties with the pledge that taxation was under review by the McCaw Committee, which will present its final report by the end of April. The work of the committee had been greatly assisted by the knowledge of Mr Hunt and it is not yet known whether his death will delay the presentation of a final report. The Government has not announced whether he will be replaced.
