Socred ‘in no hurry’

PA Wellington Social Credit will not help Labour in a push for another election if special votes next week reduce National’s majority. The league’s leader (Mr B. C. Beetham) said yesterday that Social Credit, “unlike Labour, is in no hurry to put the country through the unnecessary trauma of another General Election.”

Social Credit would not cooperate with Labour’s desire to force another election, especially since the Labour Party had made it clear that Social Credit would be a main target. “We shall certainly not allow ourselves to be used by Labour Party strategists for Labour Party purposes,” said Mr Beetham.

“Our responsibility lies towards the 340,000 New Zealanders who voted for Social Credit, many of whom wanted to see the power of the absolute majority broken, and our particular desire is to see the authority of Parliament restored rather than the purposes of establishment political parties served.”
