European head’s visit
PA Wellington The president of the European Commission, Mr Gaston Thorn, will visit New Zealand early next year. Mr Thorn, a former Prime Minister of Luxemburg, will hold "informal consultations" with . the Government on international matters and on New Zealand's continuing battle to maintain access to Europe for farm exports such as butter and lamb.
In a statement announcing the visits, the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said he was delighted that Mr Thorn had accepted the Government's invitation. "This will be the first visit by a President of the Commission and Mr Thorn's presence here will provide a timely and valuable opportunity to exchange views on wider international issues as well as our specific trade concerns." he said.
