N.Z. under-23 side easily beaten

PA Blenheim The combined NelsonMarlborough cricket team had barely an anxious moment as it cruised to a six-wicket win over the New Zealand under-22 team at Blenheim yesterday. The only period when the young New Zealand side seemed to have a hope was when the opener, Anup Nathu, and his captain, Richard Leggett, put on 131 runs for the fourth wicket, rescuing the team from a precarious position of 20 for three.

Needing to average only three runs from each of its 66 overs to win, the home team was soon ahead of the required rate, thanks mainly to an innings of 90 from only 118 balls by the opener, Andrew Jones. Even when he was out, there was plenty of batting talent to reach the target off only 52 overs. Scores: New Zealand-under 22.— 196 (R. Leggett 76, A. Nathu 65; S. Gill 5-63, M. Toynbee 3-20); Nelson-Marlborough— 119-4 (A. Jones 90, Toynbee 37 not out, R. Pierce 27; S. Tracey 3-59).
