Special Devil dead
PA Hamilton The well-performed three-year-old gelding, Special Devil, died on Wednesday under an anaesthetic when being operated on for the removal of a chipped bone from off his hind leg. Special Devil, which was bred, owned and trained by fan Vincent, of Otorohanga, won the Wanganui Guineas and ran second to Loughanure in the Wellington Guineas earlier in the current season. He won four races as a two-year-old and his stake earnings totalled $24,050. By Harnsand, which stands at Mr Vincent’s property, from the Hakiro mare, Up and Atom, Special Devil was kicked by another horse after the running of the P. and M. Plaza Purse at Te Rapa on October 26, when he finished fourth. The full extent of his injury did not become apparent until he started in the Levin Turf Classic, in which he ran last. An X-ray showed the chipped bone in his back leg. As well as his five wins. Special Devil had nine minor placings from only 20 starts.
