Values ‘will fight again’
PA Tauranga The Values Party will contest the'next scheduled General election in 1984 even though its vote in most areas was halved in the latest election, according to a leader of the party. Mr J. I. Mayson. Mr Mayson, of Mount Maunganui, who polled 243 votes in the Kaimai electorate on Noyember 28, said that members of the party would discuss the party’s attitude to the possibility of another election being called
by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). Asked about the ability of the party to finance another election campaign soon, Mr Mayson said he was not sure about the state of the party’s resources. He said, “we certainly did not spend that much on the election. It will take more than a drop in support to get our skeleton into the cupboard. The party has achieved what it set out to do and that was to keep the party together and to stand
candidates wherever it could. “I still think our support is far greater than indicated by the election results. For some reason people just can- . not. seem to vote for Values.” Mr Mayson said that he had expected the level of support for Values to drop in the latest election. “I thought that if I got 200 votes I would be doing well. Values, before November 28, decided that the election was just a hiccup along the way. There is certainly no thought of winding the party up.”
