Another London landmark goes

Another of London’s famous landmarks is to disappear. Fribourg and Treyer, tobacconists and purveyors of snuff, are leaving their well-known shop at the top of the Haymarket. * Because of soaring rent and rates the business, established in 1720, will disappear from behind one of the most famous shop-fronts in London. Customers all over the world are being told that the firm, which has been transferred within the subsidiaries of the Imperial group, is now trading from the tobacco giant’s Bewlay premises in Piccadilly. The name will be moved there as well. The firm’s own line of cigarettes, snuff, and other products will continue, but rather lamely. They will bear the picture of the Haymarket premises, from which the firm has traded since 1792. A few of the 10 staff members will move to Piccadilly “to maintain continu-
ity and keep the atmosphere of the place.” A spokesman for the owning company said: “Of course we are all annoyed and disappointed that the move is taking place. “But with the rent and rates as they were, there was nothing else we could do. ”
