Butter rise attacked
PA Wellington The increase in the price of butter to $l.lO a 500 gm pack has been attacked by Labour’s spokesman on consumer affairs, Mrs Ann Hercus (Lyttelton) as a “cynical confidence trick on the New Zealand consumer,” and “another step towards guaranteeing 20 per cent inflation.” “The timing of the increase — delayed until after the General Election — is clearly no coincidence,” she said. “Worse still, butter has now increased in price 67 per cent since the Government removed the consumer subsidy in this area, only 20 months ago. This latest rise will further fuel inflation, .both directly, and as it filters through other items such as pastry and biscuits.” The price of milk would be next to rise, after this week’s announcement of price increases in canned goods, air fares, and tobacco, she said.
