South African appeal for police holidays
PA Wellington South African rugby administrators have launched a drive to raise funds to provide holidays in the republic for 30 New Zealand policemen and their families. The “Evening Post” correspondent, Quintus van Rooyen. reports from Pretoria that the South African Rugby Board, has launched a campaign as a “good will gesture” for the New Zealand police who had done so much to keep the Springbok rugby tour going. The board has started the campaign with about $60,000 of its own funds and hopes that a further $120,000 can be raised over the next few weeks. The proposal is that 30 policemen, to be chosen by the New Zealand authorities, will be invited to spend at least two weeks on holiday in South Africa. While the fund-raising campaign is something new, the proposal that policemen be invited to South Africa has been known for several months, but although the New Zealand Police Association has had a verbal indication that the invitation would come, nothing has been received in writing.
