Airline denies cuts in services

PA Auckland Air New Zealand has rejected a pre-election allegation that it plans to drop services to six provincial airports soon. The airports, which were cited by the deputy leader of the Labour Party (Mr Lange) were Kaitaia, Whangarei. Whakatane, Timaru, Oamaru, and Westport.

It was also asserted that there would be big reductions in services to Gisborne and Blenheim.

An airline spokesman said, “We are not committed to any change in these services.” The services named have been identified as big lossmakers on the airline’s domestic network.

They have been identified as such in the yet to be publicly released domestic aviation policy review, and in an economic breakdown of domestic services which came from within the airline.

Mr Lange said the withdrawals were included in an airline planning report which was before the pre-election Cabinet. Aviation sources, however, said that a number of studies with various proposals had been made in recent times, and had gone to the Government.

As such, they were studies and nothing more, the sources said.
